KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 16
The National Human Rights Commission has urged the government to save the life of Ganga Maya Adhikari, 61, who has been staging a fast-unto-death for nearly two months at the National Trauma Centre demanding justice for her teenage son, who was murdered 17 years ago.
Ganga Maya’s 18-year-old son Krishna Prasad was kidnapped and shot dead by the then Maoist insurgents in Chitwan on 6 June 2004 on the charge that he was an informer of the government during the armed conflict.
Krishna Prasad was going to his maternal uncle’s house in Chitwan from his hometown Bhujel in Gorkha when he was abducted and killed.
Since then, Ganga Maya and her husband Nanda Prasad had time and again staged protest saying their son was innocent and people had framed him. On 22 September 2014, Nanda Prasad died during a similar hunger strike on the 334th day of the hunger strike. After that Ganga Maya has already staged at least three more hunger strikes at Bir Hospital.
Ganga Maya has been staging yet another hunger strike since December 20 last year demanding justice for her son. But, the government has shown no interest in addressing her demands.
Meanwhile, her health has started deteriorating rapidly.
The NHRC, after visiting her at the hospital today, put forth a three-point recommendation to the government to give justice to her.
The rights watchdog has also asked the government to ensure good medical facilities as her health has started deteriorating rapidly.
It has also suggested that the government form a high-level work committee with members from civil society to address her demands.
Finally, it has asked the government to find Rudra Prasad Acharya, one of the major accused in the murder case. It is said Acharya is hiding outside the country.
The family of Krishna Prasad filed an FIR with Chitwan District Police Office, accusing 13 persons, including Chhabilal Paudel as prime suspects, his son Parshuram Paudel and nephews Bhimsen Paudel, Ram Prasad Adhikari, and Januka Paudel of killing their son.
The prime accused Paudel later informed that the person firing the shot was Rudra Acharya, who is at large.
Last time Ganga Maya had ended her hunger strike in July 2018 after the government assured that it would fulfil all her demands.
